Synchronous belt pulleys - Timing are primarily used to align the motion of multiple drive shafts. Synchronous systems generally maintain a higher degree of longevity and emit less noise than gear or chain drive units. It is important to prevent the belt from exerting large forces against the pulley flanges, which can lead to belt edge wear or flange failure. The alignment force is generally higher for shorter belts than for longer belts, because the helix angle of the tensile cord decreases as the belt length increases. Also, wide belts tend to track with more force than narrow belts.
